they threw themselves together
on that cold winters night
despite the knowledge of their doom
they clung together through the gloom
and made it last till light

when she awoke and he lay sleeping
she no longer hid her fear
for with every breath she knew
her happy days would soon be few
for this and every other year
and he slept on

since then it seems that every night
brings sadness to her song
and through the days she lingers long
on thoughts of stolen light

for though she knew he loved her not
deep within she dreamed
she dreamed of him and of his touch
of how things could have been

she wanders now and then it seems
down paths no soul should seek
she realises, too late, too late
the scars have run too deep

and what of him, i hear you cry
how could he do this thing
its easier for him you see
he cannot feel a thing
