The Autumn Moon Festival (zhōngqiūji in Pinyin) dates back nearly 3000 years to the Zhou Dynasty of ancient China. A celebration of abundance and harvest completed, it is one of the two important Chinese holidays of the year (the other being Lunar New Year). Autumn Moon Festival was traditionally a time for sharing tea and small cakes (known as moon-cakes) under the full moon of the Autumnal Equinox; poetry would often be read as the luminous, austere beauty of our lunar neighbor was admired. Several legends relate to a lady (Chang'e) of the Imperial Court who was banished to the moon and the Jade Rabbit who may be seen pounding his medicinal herbs in its face. Sharing these moon-lit moments with those one loves and cares for is a special treasure for most Chinese people. Even those who may be far from home in some strange and foreign land.

Harsh Moon Over Riyadh, 1992

In the night sky, full Autumn moon

Casts shadows as I watch for rabbit

Busy pounding his rice-cakes.

No other near to share the moment

Nor another cup nearby for company;

Rabbit moon is mine alone tonight.

Full and bright, moon fills the sky

With cold and distant light, just as my

Heart is filled with muted longing.

I would be elsewhere to enjoy this

But all around is restless sand, blowing

Small storms through my thoughts.

Love for me is scattered in many mirrors,

But none are here to catch and hold

Clear moonlight reflections as I drink.

Chang'e will be there to smile once more

When peace and love next fill my spirit

As the wine and moon-cakes fill me now.

Full Autumn moon over Arab desert!

How empty it feels to lack the comfort

Of soft flesh and long ebony hair tonight.
