I heard it here. “Home is anywhere you feel comfortable in your own skin” what a concept.

For so long I have felt that

I have always been homeless.

As a child, there were tough times,

Afraid to go back to the house, because

You were afraid of what you would find.

This…is not what I am here to say.

As a young teen, a step mother came

A mother no better than the first,

So Her house never felt like home.

…not what I am here to say.

Since the last few years as a teen, until now

I have  made many a nest, but somehow

A place where you’re existing alone,

This is just a camp, without a fire.

…not what I am here to say.

I have been to many a house, where

My friends tried to make me at home.

Somehow I always shut the door,

This was their home,

I was an uncomfortable guest.

This Is what I am Here to Say

Like a sound from light, I realize,

It is that child

Who is still running,

Running away from Home.

They say home is where the heart lives, but how can the heart live when you are still running? The past will never fade, but don't let it hold you back either. Great poem.

Beautiful poem. i understand your sentiments exactly. Since my parents died i have felt homeless. Although i live alone in a flat since my divorce where home was a battlefield i cannot find peace. Home is where your heart is but when your heart is broken so is the home. I hope one day you can find that peace and serenity either with someone or on your own.

I hope that you can make your house a home that feels right. I found many comforting thing I could do - decorating, special little nothings that are everything. You deserve to feel at peace, and a warm and loving person like you deserves to feel safe and have a sense of permanence. Bless you in your journey.

Carin', like many poets, your piece pierces the heat. You may not consider yourself a poet, but the responsibility of a poet is to make the reader feel the emotion of the words, not the poet's personality. Keep writing, you will see that the more you write the better you will get.

It was an honor to see my definition of home as the introduction to this piece.
