No one told me it would be like this
Growing up I mean
I thought it would be a string of late night parties
With no one telling me what time to come home
I didn’t hear about hangovers and work schedules
Unforgivably gauche behavior and too late apologies
Early morning phone calls saying ‘I did?’, ‘I’m sorry’
‘I didn’t?’ ‘I’m sorry!’, ‘with who?’ ‘now I’m really sorry’
yeah no one told me I would act this way
and what about the great ice cream fallacy
no one told me about that one for sure
I used to say to my mother regularly
‘when I grow up I’ll eat ice cream for dinner
and any other time I want it!’
now I can….someone forgot to mention cellulite
and wide hips, how could you forget to tell your child
something so earth shattering
never mind that I learned the facts of life
I knew about unwanted pregnancies and ruined teen years
No one told me about herpes and HIV
No one mentioned ruined relationships
And shattered emotions, crushed dreams and unfulfilled hopes
Being an adult is not all it was supposed to be
I want to go back to when a double dip rocky road
Was my idea of heaven, before I knew about multiple orgasms
I want to go back to the time when staying out past midnight
Was exciting and forbidden, no one cares
What time I come home now and the thrill is gone
I want to go back to birthday presents and Barbie dolls
I’m tired of paychecks and two-week vacations
Pap smears and mammograms
Why didn’t they tell me about all this years ago
I might have enjoyed being young a little bit longer

Great poem. I get that feeling too, only without the Barbie dolls :o)

I really enjoyed reading this one Sue because it was a 'rant' alright - but you still have a very calm feel to it. It doesn't sound too frustrating and annoying and at the same time, it expresses yourself in just the right words.

I was thinking the same actually. I was looking back at my school life and thinking...jeez, I used to say "LIFE SUCKS" then just coz of a rocky relationship with family but that was it. Only one thing was wrong then and now? Everything is wrong!

Yes true and that
made it even more mystical
having a midnight curfew like
a princess. i loved to sneak in later

Perfect.. I know that feeling so well. Must be Monday. (smile) This reminds me of the poem thats been circulating on the net titled I resign.. Thats what I want to do, resign from being an adult.

This is a very creative write Sue. 10+++
