I was always leaving.
Even when I came, I looked back over my shoulder at what was gone.
Shadows between  dark oaks melted down.
Silence swept beneath the stream.
The San Gabriel mountains wobbled and cascades of granite spilled out.
The trail dissolved into mist and evaporated.
I was always leaving
What had not been there.
