Just clearing me desk, me darlins, cos I is away for me 51st birthday in sunny Spain! :)) Will be back again in about ten days, but until then, be good, have fun and hasta la vista! Siempre, Kate xx

SHE FLIES HIS KITE

She took his kite –
a faded, misshapen tangle
of tissue, sticks and string –
and walked away from him
backwards, carefully unravelling
his mess of bits on the bouncy
spring grass, its buoyant green
willing flight.

He watched the way
her eyes moved, anticipating
each curious uncrossing
of lame stick from limp,
self-sorrowing string;
her deft fingers plucking
sad tissue into place;

the bite of her lip as with
sharp, upward jolts of her arms
she shook the bird to life.

Then her rainbow gleam of eyes,
taut triumph of her lifted cheeks
as the playful diamond dipped
deep into the dancing blue;

her unconscious flick of wrist
tying ribbons of warm air with
every pull on his string.

March 1963 and they were both ten.

But he knew then
she would never let go.

A beautiful send-off--
with a decade behind them, and having explored (undoubtedly) every barn, fence and chicken roost in the neighborhood, now they explore the skies... I can feel the taut pull of the string, and the stubborn loopty-loops kites do insist on making before they're full-sail

But more than those lines, I love the gentle, subtle other story-- between the lines-- of him for all those years letting her hold the string to his star-- of him giving her the sway--the say-- and of her, making it/him fly higher and higher. And of the mutual trust, and fun of the relationship. --Quite a ride.

Have fun, chick. And a very Happy Birthday to you. --Charlie

Oh Sweet Kate, I surely do love this one. It has such a caring nurturing feel to it of childhood sweethearts who grow up together and never lose that young magic of youth because of it. To have such a devotion and desire to please and guide must be one of the utmost pleasures of this world. Your write brought back memories of my own childhood crushes and loves that though not thought of often are stirred by such sweet words as these. Enjoy your vacation and don't forget pictures...
