Homesick for Cedar Point, the Amazement Park, in Sandusky, Ohio ...

Image (c) 2007, Karla Dorman

Anticipation:  you could feel it, thick
and building, in the back of the station
wagon as we kids looked for signs pointing
the way.  The closer we got, the farther
away we seemed to be.  Suddenly, in
the distance --- there!  Don't you see it??  The hills
of the Blue Streak 'coaster!  Right THERE!!  Cedar
Point unfolded before our eyes in all
its glory - the Ferris wheel!  Sky Ride!  Space
Spiral!  We're here:  want to ride this and that
and --- couldn't exit the car FAST enough.
Okay, kids, settle down.  We've got all day ---
let's meet up for lunch at noon.  Go have fun.
And we did, spinning around and around,
up and down, inside out, forwards, backwards
and back again.  Met up to compare our
bravery (or lack, thereof), only to
go back for more --- I really miss those days ....

Vividly recalled those days of total abandonment in our youth. Weren't they the greatest? You painted the picture with such clarity, I could once again see them. JMW

I miss those days too. What happened to them? Too much television?????? I turned mine off except for the news and occasional pbs. A couple of episodes each of the csi perversions and the reality shows were enough. I get a good carnival nostalgia fix every year going to the state fair....Jerry

Sadly, those innocent days are gone now... in this day and age I would be afraid to turn my kids loose to go and have fun at an amusement park.

"The closer we got, the farther
away we seemed to be"
Such a universal feeling that applies to the situation described, but to many others as well.
The enthusiasm is very well expressed Karla. :-)

I too recall going to Cedarpoint as a child. My dad lived in Ohio and he would take us each summer. For me the greatest thrill of all was speeding down the water log ride, with the water spraying up on each side and splashing all over us...the one on the front always got soaked, guess who always rode the front? Yeap, me! Loved it...hadn't thought about those trips in quite some time, thank you my friend for the trip down memory lane! Enjoyed it!
Blessings,
Joyce B.

A lovely write that reminds me of the country fair with roller coasters, fireworks, and a little of everything. Back in those days, the schools sent all children--who wanted to attend--to the county fair on school buses. Can you believe it?! We didn't have chaperones and didn't need any. We just had to be back at the bus at a certain time if we wanted to get back home. Those were wonderful days.

You brought back wonderful memories for me too, Karla! As much as I loved the rides as a kid, I feel sorry for the person I ride with as an adult! Don't you dare move to rock the seat on the ferris wheel! Don't even blink or breathe! lol ;) Wonderful poem that I truly enjoyed ... hugs - T

We in NJ area went to the Wildwood boardwalk, specifically for Hunts pier, as a kid I could have lived on that pier, walking through the ghost Pirate ship or riding the enclosed roller coaster called the Golden nugget mine ride...Ah, thanks for the memories, Karla (by the way, we got rain AGAIN, see what you can do about it will ya, LOL?)

I've driven by Cedar Point many times, but I'll leave the roller coaster ridin to others. Why should I pay 'em to puke, when I can do that, for free!
