Why is it that a singer or performer can reference first person, like this Ray Charles song titled, "If You Were Mine," which is one of my favorite songs, and if a poet references first person everyone thinks he's talking about himself and start leaving goofy comments like he's the one in the poem. People need to lightened up and quit taking verse so serious. Anyway here's some lines from the song with some of mine mixed in.

"If you were mine
I'd never let you leave me.
If you were mine
I'd never let you go,
because you are just what
I always wanted
and I think you ought to know.
From the moment I first
saw you."

Anyway that ends Rays quote,
now I'll float.

When you first appeared
my love emotions stirred,
I could feel love honeying up
 my heart and my  head,
At night I tossed and turned
in my bed.
During the day I walked
around in a daze,
wouldn't come out of
it for days.
Everywhere I went,
seemed I was in a maze.

Now lets pick back up with
some of Rays lines.

"I'm not one to believe in love
at first sight,
but you changed my mind
last night.
I fell in love but I didn't even
intend to,
but as I try I couldn't keep
my eyes off you."

Salute to Ray Charles
"If you were mine."

But every song Ray sang, I feel it is about himself, and coming from his "Cryin' Time" and "Georgia On My Mind". Like your poem and Rays song...and the way you combined 'em...
