In Solitude
I went to church today
Alone—no one else was there
I knelt before the altar of God
Imploring through faith and prayer
Asking for so many things
To clear my troubled mind
Pleading for strength and understanding
For a spirit that is always kind.
Sometimes I am impatient
With the one I dearly love the most
Sometimes my words are too sharp
When I should be holding that someone close.
Sometimes I am easily offended
Becoming defensive all too quick
Spewing the sour taste of words
That resemble the devil’s walking stick.
Help me to be humble, dear Lord, I pray
To show charity and kindness to all
To be tolerant and forgiving
Even when emotion renders stubborn gall.
Give me strength to be the person
I’ve always wanted to be
To be well thought of by family and friends
And be an example for others to see.
Much later, I rise from my burning knees
Facing the polished altar before me
Feeling the infinite presence of God
And the Voice that always sets me free.

What an insightful and humbling prayer, Jeanette.
You have a way of putting into words what we all feel inside, even when we have a tendency to ignore the feelings and go our own selfish way. "In Solitude" is a message I'm thankful to read and read again.

Your experience in life and great wisdom is valued and cherished, as are you, my dear friend.

Well-prayed!!:) {Almost started with "welcome to the club," but I was afraid I might offend. What inspired the thought? MY impatience, MY defensiveness, MY weakness. . .but it IS a good-sized club. Right?} Thanks for this deeply felt and inspiring tribute to the Voice. Love, Phyllis

Jeanette this is oh so special and quite understandable, I am sure we all have these emotions from time to time. Sitting and setting ourselves before the altar to humble and ask for wisdom and forgiveness is humbling within itself.

The best poem I have read in a long time.
We all need to pray in solitude - when no one else is watching except that someone from above - someone that we all need to communicate with more often.

Many Blessings,

I love the part "...the devil's walking stick" - extremely original and creative. These are the things we should all be praying for. Beautifully worded, and the title is perfect for the feel of this poem. Love and Hugs.

Jeanette, this prayer is that of a humble person, seeking God's forgiveness and for strength and the abililty for you to show charity and kindness in all that you do. This is inspiring, uplifting, and a heartfelt prayer that I will remember for a long time. So many times I feel this very same way and this is a reminder to seek peace through God's word. An exceptional write.

I have to keep this, Jeanette. It's a prayer that strikes home to me. I commend you for this great writing and for your desire to keep pursuing the goal of godliness with your loved one.
The last verse expresses beautifully the peace within that you received, the strength to keep walking in God's way.
