Cargo is inspired by Norman Mailer's comments on a recent Charlie Rose interview about nearing the end. Mailer confirmed he was writing a follow-up to his book The Castle in the Forest but that it takes a long time and he's fully aware that he's like a ping pong ball that can roll off the table at any time.

Mailer is one of the US writers I read avidly in my youth and I have huge respect for him though I haven't read half of what he's written.

CARGO

My body carries
the cargo of age:
bags under the eyes
and spare tyre
around the waist.

It's a ship
coming into port,
and I must throw
everything overboard
to keep afloat.

Write a boatload of these, Kenny! You're just coming of age, when a man has about enough wisdom to accomplish the Elvis pelvic gyrations and nothing too big falls to the floor! I have missed you, I hope all is well for you wherever you are on the globe. Stop in anytime. Be well...

Love Always,
Sage
