Waking up at three in the morning is common for me. Sometimes writing a poem helps me go back to sleep.

Sometimes I wake
At three in the morning
With elusive poems
In my head.
Like eating air
To lose weight.

They come and go
These naked Vietnam gifts
Without wrapping,
Gliding from
Window to window
Like ghost shadows.

Chirping cricket sentries
Guard against
Invisible enemies.

No rockets red glare
Flares popping in air.
Silence everywhere
With wind voices
Whispering through ancient oaks.

I think of Bob
Between his twin engines
On the delta
With snappy rounds
Piercing
Swift-boat aluminum.

Smallwood drinks a typhoon
Fifth of hot
Okinawa sake
Passing out
Dead drunk.
For three days.

Snipers seek me out.

I’m back in my house
Checking edged weapons
In the dark.
Making sure they are ready.

My army of knives
Wants me to sleep.

Vietnam, The undeclared war, where an ungratful government, allowed our returning heroes to be spat upon and to twist in the wind forever, without a thank-you for your sacrifice! I want to say," Thank-you and I am so proud of you!" SC

Another superb poem Lloyd. It's sharp, it's edgey, it's real!

Wonderfully written with revealing thoughts that remain in your mind of times lived one and relived over and over. Riveting suspense yet sad overtones....

Be always safe,

Lloyd - Powerful poem. The stark imagery and strong rhythm equal more than the sum of their parts. I could quote the whole poem, but these ending lines are so powerful; haunting, desperate and hopeful simultaneously. - David

Well done, Lloyd. You know the horrors of war and you write damn well at 3 in the morning. Thanks, my friend. Now get some sleep. -gene.

Lloyd,

PTSD nightmares will do that - I can't imagine the horrors you experienced - but this comes as close as I'd want - I pray you find peace - well done. These lines are effectively penned, chilling, yet healing, at the same time -

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.

And thank YOU for your service - welcome home, soldier, welcome home. :)
