"It's a boy," the midwife said
As she placed him on my breast.
The wrinkled mass of flesh
Squirming on my chest...
Looked more like a raw chicken to me.
"He's beautiful!" I sighed
As my newborn baby cried;
This new world, crisp and cold,
To him, just minutes old...
I held and warmed my baby chicken.
Throughout his childhood years
I kissed away his tears.
I taught him wrong from right
And told him not to fight...
Unless it was for a just cause.
And soon he was a teen,
Kind-hearted, never mean.
The girls all loved him so
But he always let me know...
"You're my number one girl, Mama."
And then he was a man,
His own son in his hand.
He loved his baby dearly,
We all saw that so clearly...
But the stress of life got in the way.
One day while on his bed
With a gun against his head,
His finger pulled the trigger--
His problems were much bigger...
Then any of us ever imagined.
Before I started crying
I told them they were lying;
I'd seen him just last night--
He kissed and held me tight...
And said, "I love you Mama."
But they told me he was gone,
My one and only son!
Will Jesus take his hand
And make me understand...
As I hold his leather jacket to my face?
I had to see him again--
They covered up his head.
His skin was cold and pale;
I rubbed, to no avail...
I HAD to make my baby warm again!
A week later, I walked to my car,
Holding my son in my left arm--
Him in a cardboard box, so plain,
And I could swear I heard him say,
"I love you Mama...I'm sorry."

(I wrote this just weeks after my darling son MJ pased in 1999)

Beautiful tribute...and very touching. May you find peace's tough but sometimes we just have to bite our tongue and move on - with the memories, of course. Excellent write.
