Where did you come from?
How did you find your way into my heart?
I only know you had me
Right from the very start
That smile, that laugh
Those dark thoughtful eyes
Always the diplomat
In another’s defense you would without question rise
You’d do what was right
What good, decent people do
I remember the harassment, the abuse
From far in the past and from very near
Somehow I think you’d stand for me too
And maybe that’s why you seemed like a friend
Someone who’d be there no matter what, till the end
To shield a little girl from evil in the night
To hold her and tell her
Everything is alright
So she wouldn’t be afraid of the dark
Of the nightmares that came
You’d help her overcome
A fear she could not name
You’d show her there were
No monsters under the bed
No bad man waiting
By your hand she’d be led
To somewhere that’s safe
With no fists, no force, no ridicule or dread
You’d make sure she knew
She wasn’t better off dead
That the people who hurt her
Were the ones who were wrong
You’d hold her hand
And help her be strong
You’d tell her she didn’t deserve
The horror and pain
That to live in constant fear
Is living in vain
You’d teach her to stand
And take care of herself
Instead of putting up walls
That ended up as a cell
From that invisible prison
You would release
You’d keep her safe
As you set her free
Because that is what ordinary heroes will do
Every day, never knowing, a small miracle or two
For you are truly an Angel
A man to be treasured
You earned trust I did not know I could give
A gift that cannot be measured
A gift that I will try to give to another
A gift of strength that you helped me uncover
So that if one day perhaps
I have the chance
To help one who needs it
I can tell them it’s a candle of hope lit by an Angel
And every bit of kindness
And goodness will feed it
To keep it glowing strong
Through these darkest of days
It’s bound to be a long journey
And I’ll be by your side, Angel, as you were for me
Along the way
