"Got a dollar for food, Mister?"

by Ted L Glines

Down in the subway under the street
bums in rags make our collection
you cringe as we arrive to greet
cash you give - gives you protection
the fear in you will seek relief
you give to us -  it's not too late
or we will hurt you - cause you grief
just one more collection plate
the man in rags you paused to greet
may give you pause for deep reflection
down in the subway under the street
he may give more than your protection
under those rags - way beneath
something hungers without rest
you may feel the sting of teeth
and then you'll join us in our quest
blood on the tracks - blood on the ground
your blood is rich - you make no fuss
your moans will hardly make a sound
and come next day you'll prey with us.

a tough one Ted, I remember in NY when these thugs attacked this man, he pulled a gun and shot all of them. Then the city prosecuted him for protecting himself, you know how I feel about self protection cause you read my book, Judged by 12 or carried by six, it's a personal thing. The cops sometimes can't even protect themselves
