“Keep smilin', keep shinin,'
Knowin' you can always count on me,
For sure,
That's what friends are for.
For good times and bad times,
I'll be on your side, forever more,
That's what friends are for.”
Dionne Warwick,
That’s What Friends Are For
Meet Ilia – ASPCA’s 2008 Dog of the Year;
A Very Special Canine, Who Alleviates Fear
His young friend and master, Cole Massie
Is ten-years old, and suffers from Cerebral Palsy
Ilia – a very special black Lab, Golden Retriever mix
Has been providing Cole with inspiration during therapy
“This wonderful dog inspires and motivates my son,
Far better than anyone else ever has,” says Cole’s Mom
“Ilia has a very special healing touch, that cannot be taught,
He provides amazing incentive to Cole, and keeps my boy calm.”
This summer, Cole was faced with difficult life-changing surgery
That would enable him to walk, and free him from his wheelchair
Young Cole was fearful of this surgery, and only decided to have it
When he was told that his faithful friend, Ilia, for him, would be there
Ilia – Cole’s extremely dedicated companion and service dog
Traveled more than 7,000 miles to be by his young friend’s side
And at an ASPCA award ceremony in New York City next month
Boy and Dog, will accept Ilia’s ‘Dog Of The Year’ award with pride
Young Cole Massie is now on his way,
To becoming an independent walker;
And his truly remarkable canine friend, Ilia,
Will be by his side – every step of the way.
Now That’s What True Friends Are For,
Especially Our Extremely Loyal Furry Ones;
And Yet One More Reason, I’ll Love Dogs,
Until My Own Time On This Earth, Is Done.
