there's a puppy down the road

 living on the church steps.

nothing on the mind but maybe

 diggin up a bone

 leftover from the barbque

 on sunday.

a celebration complete with a band

 and grown-ups dancing away,

 children running the lot,

 chasing each other,

 calling over to the pup,

 wanting her to play -

 jumping in puddles leftover

 from the rain,

 rolling in flowers grown up

 to the neck,

 where the honey bees collect

pollen for nector

to take to the hive,

drones busy working

creating a golden delight

dripping slowly from the

honey comb in the old oak tree

across the street.

but the pup stays on the steps,

keeping a safe distance from the herd,

looking out on the road,

the dust blowing by

from the cars careening their way

to the work place.

pup yawns at the sun

and prepares to run

going into the day

that's waiting.
