Sometimes, when dealing with grief, comfort can be found in the most unforeseen places. This poem is about finding a loved one's memory in the light bleeding through a lampshade.

As I rest, I see your smile shining upon the shade
A momentary glimpse of life; something for which I prayed
I want to leave the light aglow, so you will stay forever
But, deep within my heart I know, I simply cannot ever
As darkness comes, your smile is near, but when daylight arrives
The sunshine often brings a tear for our now-distant lives
I turn the switch, the light goes dim; again, your smile is gone
Vanished amid a lonely world, darkest after the dawn.

I glance upon the brilliant sky and sunlit rays of gold
Wondering if Heaven’s grand walls could ever be so cold
Each step I take, each bend I round, my two feet lead the way
My heart once did, but now my heart longs for the end of day
Each evening as I sit beside the lampshade, you are near
Your smile reflected in the shadows, oh so very clear
Lost in my thoughts and joyful dreams, I find tremendous peace
If for a few soon fleeting hours, before the dark shall cease.

I often choose to disregard the day you said goodbye
The pain is still too real, today; there is no sense, so why
Instead, I choose to see the light as traced upon your smile
Found in the lampshade, every night, if only for awhile
The light found on my corner stand does more than fill the room
It brings to mind a sense of peace amid oppressive gloom
In life, you always taught me how to cope when darkness fell
In death, you have shown me the way to treat the shadows, well.

Once, I walked on a frozen landscape that wasn't as colder as my heart after losing someone very dear.
