At the conclusion of The Last Supper, Jesus prays to the Father for His disciples. There is no doubt that John, the Elder, is quoting the actual words of Jesus at this point -- words which he heard from the mouth of John, the Beloved Disciple, who was sitting right next to Jesus in the upper room. Some Bibles, such as the excellent New American Bible, correctly print Jesus' words as poetry. However, in my own translation, "Essential Bible Wisdom: GOOD NEWS by John, the Beloved Disciple, and John, the Elder", I have followed the tradition established by the King James, the RSV, the Amplified, etc., and printed them as prose.

Father, the time has come.

Glorify your Son,

so that the Son may glorify you.

You gave Me authority over all mankind.

Therefore, Father,

to all the people You have given Me,

I will grant Eternal Life.

Eternal Life results from knowing you,

the only True God,

and Him whom you have sent,

[Jesus, the Christ].

Now that I’m returning to you, Father,

please grant that all these you gave to Me

may experience the full measure of My happiness.

I don’t ask that you take them out of the world,

but that you keep them from harm.

Consecrate them with Truth,

for Truth is your Message.

I don’t ask just for these alone,

but on behalf of all

who will come to believe in Me.

I pray they all may be one

and that they will be one in Us,

just as you are in Me,

and I am in you.

And therefore the world may believe

that you have sent Me

and that you love them

just as you love Me.

In this prayer, Jesus confirmed that the Word of God is Truth and it sanctifies. Theology and Apologetics do not.

Thanks John,
