I Am a Poet

A challenge by one who I do not know,

Caused me to put some serious thought,

Into why I choose to write poetry,

Thus being, in fact, a poet.

I am a poet because there are rainbows,

And sunsets, sunrises, lightning and thunder.

I write because there are children and grandpas,

And kittens gentle purrs, and puppies licking faces.

I am a poet because I have laughed and I have cried,

Danced with joy and curled up in depression.

I write because I have both felt and caused pain,

And have learned lessons from them both.

I write because in searching for writing the words,

Life just makes more sense, becomes more real.

I am a poet because I live.

A very wise man once told me "the job of a poet is to evoke emotion in the reader" You have done that. I felt what you felt when I saw and experienced the same things, but you put them all together for me. Good job, madam poet.

What better reason to be a poet than; it gives more sense to life. I think I like to write poetry because it decries wordiness and says so much in so few words.
