Getting By

Most of us spend our lives working every day just "Gettin By"

Some folks
Just manage to get by
Living
Paycheck to paycheck
Seems to be
The only way
Of making it
From day to day

Filling out applications
Going on interviews
Combing the newspapers
Keeping up with the latest news

Watching a friend
Who manages somehow
To drive a
BMW
Or a shiny new black BENZ
Wondering to yourself
What business is he or she in?

Are they just getting by
It’s hard to know
They so busy they can’t
Stop to speak
Or wave hello

Are they getting by
Who knows
Most of us
Try our best
Hiding behind a smile
Trying not to let the frown show

My kinfolk got by
By doing day work
Getting paid to clean up
Other folks dirt

It was honest
Although hard
Hell
Some of us still
Cleaning
&
Cutting
Other folks yards

Getting by on a wing and a prayer
Although some finished
Highschool
They still asking me
Say, you got a couple of dollars you can spare?

I got tired of getting by
So I went to business school
And college
Head always in a book
At least if I ain’t got nothing else
I got the knowledge

My friend says she is tired
Of doing what’s right and fair
Being Miss Goodie Two Shoes
And
Always being there

But here I am
Just like all the rest
Doing what is right
Still
Trying my best

And just getting by!

I think your poem says exactly what we are all doing...I see people I know, who I thought had what I had,and they seem to have a lot of "something":-) and they are getting by a little faster then me! And I too wonder?

Continue to write...do not let the pen drop!

Thanks for writing about the working class existential angst of getting by, looking for a job sometimes, trying to reach for something better and meaningful in one's life, and making do by and by.
