“All the arguments to prove man's superiority

Cannot shatter this cold hard fact:

In suffering, the animals are our equals.”

Peter Singer

I first saw her, several years ago

She and her soul mate, stopped by

So, I began giving them a little food

They would eat and leave, always shy

Recently, her mate of many years died

And she is pregnant, and now, all alone

So, I offered her some shelter in my shed

She seems content, in this temporary home

She now has a safe, warm place, to have her kittens

I will find them all good homes, after they are weaned

And, she can remain here with us forever, if she wants to

Instead of returning to those awful streets, now quite mean

I have decided to name this soon to be mother – ‘Sweetie’

After my very understanding, and very compassionate wife

If we can’t show a little kindness, to any being, who is in need

Neither of us think there is much point to this thing, we call ‘life’

And it seems that whenever any of our pets must leave us

They somehow compassionately send another, in their place

As I sit out here, in this old shed, with this feline mother to be

Gazing at her, I can somehow see our dear old Jessie, in her face

"Sweetie" you found her or she found you, that's the question that have no need for an answer.
PeeWee, you are one heck of a soft heart that every creature deserves to know.

Another beautiful poem Ed; I think maybe Jessie sent 'Sweetie' to you because she knew that she'd be well taken care of and that her kittens would be found good homes. Well done - it's beautiful. As is your heart!

Well, the shed is a better place than YOUR favorite hangout, the outhouse...funny how the animals kind of congregate at your place, there must be an animal grapevine whereas they all tell each other about you...Ed

Hi Mr. Ed, "
If we can’t show a little kindness, to any being, who is in need
Neither of us think there is much point to this thing we call ‘life’"

Sir, there are so many instances that I have witnessed in my life that has revealed the evil of humanity. People who seem to be popular and work hard. But I watched how their cruelty to animals, their real hatred toward them, became their undoing.
Thank you for sharing this....

In Spirit,
Bear

Yes this is true Mr. Ed - seems our animal friends understand
humanity more than humans do, and they give so much affection
and companionship without complaints and accounting, even
after they go, they still remain somehow. Your poem made me
cry for my dog Mooshi, my pet for 14 years, and my cat Casper-
9 years (all white, blue eyes)
