Ancient performance........

A beautiful day to take a stroll,
walking on sand so wet and cool.
Leaving a trail of footprints behind,
vanishing with each pristine, circling pool.

A welcomed chill on such a hot day,
to appease the body right down to the core.
With each inhale a subtle hint of salt,
as if breathing in all that came before.

Best time of all is late afternoon,
when pelicans and dolphins make their rounds.
An ancient performance repeated many times,
each exposed magical step, wealth abounds.

From time immortal through each passing century,
such perfect creatures mastering their skill.
Mesmerizing, fascinating and uncontaminated,
pelicans and dolphins sharing at will.

Hovering high above in search of food,
pelicans swirling amongst the clouds.
Tucking their wings in a single bound,
diving down as if layered within shrouds.

Dolphins dance above and below,
their presence known along the shore.
A splendor to gaze upon, such iridescent sheen,
as they glide past gracefully searching for more.

Seagulls outline the seashore boundary,
extending out as far as the eyes can see.
Oh the lull of ocean waves,
yet so much activity within the sea.

Gracefully and spiritually it all began,
and just as suddenly it all comes to an end.
Tranquility returns as day turns to night,
yet somewhere they lurk beyond the next bend.

A beautiful day to take a stroll,
walking on sand so wet and cool.
Leaving a trail of footprints behind,
vanishing with each pristine, circling pool.

Simple cadences and sonorous sentences adrift in vivid imagery... adroit co-mingling of enduring features of the sea with the ephemeral touch at the end, intriguing juxtapositions and sensitive handling of a sensitive subject. Wonderfully wrought.

SUCH beautiful imagery in this poem, I really really love it. Nature and animals/sea animals, etc, are some of my favorite things to read about, and this is a top quality poem. Blessings, Michelle

I like your circling refrain-the beginning coming back to be the end.
And that is some refreshing imagery to go with your very beautiful picture.

A reveling in glorious nature and also a hint of sadness for the future-like those footprints which disappear with the incoming tide?
Beautifully written, Karen...

I like how you're able to give a new and fresh perspective of the ocean; a place you love and write about often. This poem relaxes the reader. The best part about the ocean is that if we build on its edge, it will take back what belonged to it. Love and Hugs,
