A new day

The Streets, Drugs, Crime, Violence?

There has to be a better way

yes you, Young Black boy

There can be a new day

Its start with the elders and our generation

We have to uplift, set an example and uphold

Show them that

yes they can break the mold

of what society has written and scripted

having them think they are less than what they are,

and what we have been is all they can be

giving up and proving them right surely is tempting

but prove them wrong and you will see

Just how wonderful a new day can be

I was deeply moved by this poem Derek, it has a very powerful message for even generations to come. I would love for all the High schools where I live to read this poem and make it a Motto! Thanks for sharing and caring!

Sincerely,
Margaret

I love the elements in this poem--the challenge to both young and older; the honesty that reveals the temptation to give up; and the hope it offers. This one should be read by every "Young Black boy."

GREAT MESSAGE-- I take care of a "young black boy" to use your words, and this is something I hope he always remembers, I really love it, maybe I will read it to him one day to keep him inspired upwards and onwards, as he is going now.
