The cool autumn wind
Sends leaves leaping across
The browning grass
Where wild turkeys forage
At the woods edge,
The toms strutting
In magnificent display
Before disinterested hens.
Along the creek's edge
Are a number of deer,
Their coats turning gray
Before the approaching winter,
The bucks spar valiantly
Over the does
And the right
To pass on their genes
To the next generation.
Somewhere beyond the trees
A black bear searches
For a suitable place
Within which
To spend
The cold months.
And at home
We unpack our winter clothes
And flip the switch
From a/c to heat,
We settle into our easy chairs
With full bellies
And socked feet,
Harboring little fear
Of the approaching storms
For our creature comforts
Are ensured.
