Take A Ride On The Subway

Riding the New York subway in the 80's
---------------------------------------

You enter one of the many entrances on or
around forty second street

Steep stairs taken at two at a time

Drop your token into the turnstile

Push your way through entering into
a maze of confused passengers

Uptown, Downtown, Brooklyn, Queens,
Times Square shuttle

All ways to the famed iron horses

You now are in the transient capitol of
New York's subway system

Pick a number of a train line
for a ride

How about number six?

Making all stops along Lexington avenue
in the borough of Manhattan

Going north into the maligned borough
of the BRONX

Through the rough and tough
south Bronx

Poor people living in the hood

Further north through a tunnel
into fresh air

Continuing on an elevated track
over Westchester avenue

The train has begun to empty

Still further north it goes past
Parkchester

Reaching Westchester Square where
General George Washington traveled
in 1776

Three more stations until the final stop
Pelham Bay Park

Last stop everybody off

The motorman leaves his compartment
and walks to the rear of the train

He opens the rear compartment and
begins the reverse travel process

Going south now back to Manhattan

Reversing every 75 minutes in the
endless subway ride for weary
passengers

Yet it is an experience as a passenger
never to be forgotten

I AM ORIGINALLY FROM NEW YORK, SO I REMEMBER THE SUBWAY SYSTEM. IT CAN BE 'HARSH' DURING RUSH HOUR, BUT WITH NEW YORK BEING THE SIZE THAT IT IS...THANK GOD FOR THE SUBWAYS! THANKS FOR SHARING, TONY, THIS BROUGHT BACK MEMORIES. LOVE AND BLESSINGS,
JOYCE*HIS INSPIRATIONS

You have made the subway a remarkable place to visit...thanks for this.

My wife and I rode the subway many years ago when we travelled from Ireland, (Belfast), to the States on holiday. We went fron New Jersey to New York that day, and we visited one of the twin towers, right up to the viewing lounge. The subway tram broke down that day, and it was around twenty minutes before they got her going again. I'll bet that hasn't happened to too many Americans out there.
Anyway, you brought back some great memories Anthony, so thank you.

Well done, Gerry

Now now Tony
You got me home sick
for the BMT IRT And IND all traveling in their perspective directions
BMT to Coney Island, IND the A train of music fame
as a kid my friends and I had nothing to do but ride the lines to nowhere, just killing time on a beautiful sunny summer day
then end the day at 42nd Street 2 hamburgers for 25 cents and a coke
knew where every line started and ended......
that was then, this is now Best be strapped if you ride them now......
Peace be with you Brother
MERRY CHRISTMAS

Quite a ride, nightmarish from my point of view, almost surreal but not,
more located in that concrete, hard bitten, detached journalist genre, still very popular, life in the States, take care your self, Saludos

Oh boy do I love riding the subway and the Long Island Rail Road what we call the "Rinky Dink Express! There you go making me homesick, first stop Penn Station with Madison Square Garden and the Felt Forum just above. Take a cabbie from there to the Museum of Natural History with the Planetarium as the other half. Gosh, you really are making me homesick...

Be always safe,
Karen

TONY, how great to see you.
Oh boy on 42nd, a bloke from nam was on the street walikg over him were the commuters. I shielded him, listened and pail the sally ally for his accomodation. I yelled at the commuters, but they were blind.
Sublime poetry. It brings in such a mood of truth!

Nothing like actually falling asleep on one of those trains and then waking up not knowing what time it is or where you are.
