Poem about the emotions of being widowed...

                                      …And Yet Life Goes On

His favorite fishing rods and reels are lined up in the garage as if standing patiently waiting to be loaded for the next bass tournament.

Each and every pole is strung with the latest rigging that he personally modified to catch the “big bass”…never to be cast by him again.

The Fender bass guitar that he played so proficiently and effortlessly lies quietly in the case never to be touched by his magic fingers again.

His amp stands silent in the corner never to bring forth the sounds of his special way of playing music.

...and yet life goes on.

His favorite shirt hangs in the closet; his shoes by the side of the bed...never to be worn by him again.

His razor and shaving cream are on the vanity…waiting for him.

Four thirty PM comes and goes and he’s still not home…and I’m still waiting on him.  No “Honey, I’m home” kiss today…or ever again.

No “Honey it’s time to wake up” kiss with my morning coffee in his hand…no kiss to tell me he’s leaving for work.

…and yet life goes on.

I can’t go to the National Cemetery because that’s where reality is.

The reality that my life partner will never …ever hold me again; never …ever kiss me again…never hold my hand…never be there for me to share the good and bad times.   I see the grave at the end of the row right by the road. That grave holds captive my sunshine, my smiles, my love and my life…and yet I can’t go there.  I can’t bear to see his name on the monument.  That will only prove that he is gone and this is my forever…alone.

…and yet life goes on.

I know he would not want me to wallow in my grief…but I’m lost in my sorrow. Sorrow that feels like I’m in a dark cave with a multitude of underground tunnels and I can’t find the right one to lead me toward the light.  I don’t know when I’ll feel the sun shining on my face again.

…and yet life goes on.

I know that “time will help mend a broken heart” but my spirit is crushed.

I’m trying so desperately to find my way…I have so much to live for but nothing to look forward to. My children need their mother.   My grandchildren need their Mamaw. I need my husband…my partner…my companion…my friend…my love. Will I ever feel complete again?

…and yet life goes on.
