I wrote this in college. I visited a nursing home for the first time in years. I saw a man facing the end of his life. I will never forget looking at him and what I felt.

Old Man

You were sitting

  ....... there

staring out the window

from your wheelchair

Old man

          I saw you

                sitting, staring, still, alone

                   the sunlight upon your body

      my body froze

 timeless fright

           life's last moments

precious sacred second

           staring out the window

               from your prison

What I would give to know

       what you were thinking

Haha! I am seventy-one come next April, and that old geezer might just have been thinking what a hot dish you were. Haha!!

I have worked in nursing homes for years and it is my exoerience that most old people are happy and thankful for all the blessings they've had in life, they miss their loved ones that have passed away and are anxious to join them. Maybe he was dreaming about the next time he'd get to see his wife?

Kathleen,

Both of my parents died in nursing homes, so this really hit home. Welcome to the Den!
