A short poem I worte after reading an article about the auctioning off of Natalie Barney's effects after her death in 1972 |

L’Amazone
In a nightgown
pristine white satin
they laid her to rest
a sprig of ivy laced
between fingers grown old
a lover’s picture
upon her breast
one of many
devoted throughout.
20 rue Jacob
mystical in the brilliant sun
her faithful gather
to bid farewell
to their goddess
their muse
l’Amazone.
Paintings by the famous
of the famous
friends…lovers
books
signed with words
of adoration
love
desire
obsession.
lamps
rugs
sofas
tables
a blue bed – Louis XV
studded with white
huge and ornate
a first love
lying on Violet sheets
Dropped
obscenely against a wall…
a lifetime reduced
to
the auctioneer’s call.
