Not metaphor, not my history but real history. I think I had in mind more the march of Chief Joseph (Nez Pierce) than the Cherokee but this song is being done this winter with the "Across the Sea of Madness" demo being recorded now on my digital equipment.

So unitl I get a paid website that allows Audio only (not video -that doesn't help me here!)I'll just post lyrics--

I just completed a two hour session today using this melody for an extended piano improv.
Thanks for reading...

Trail of tears        4/21/08

It was the hot, dry summer of ‘77

The rivers were low and stained,

The mountains & valley burned with our dying pains

Along that trail of tears,

Where the sky still looked so blue,

Our hopes were broken & all our fears came true .

On that dusty trail, in the august heat -

They made us beat a slow, tormented retreat.

             [Along that trail of tears]

By the winter of ’78, our time was near

And it was far too late…

Along that “Trail of Tears”

(We bore our hopes & fears)

There was a cold, rocky place –

Where I last saw your loving face…

Along that “Trail of Tears”

I last looked into your eyes

It was a cold, hard rocky place

Where we said our last goodbyes…

They marched us north through

                         the cold, dark woods,

To the far, final borderline

Along the way, we left our earthly goods

That was where we met for the last time.

.//. “Along that “Trail of Tears…”

Beautifully written, and most assuredly a song of tears…. So well written Michael.

This could be big.. I'm thinking of a native American singer, like Gordon Lightfoot.

I really liked this. I was expecting a Native American poem, so was really refreshed to see it used in a similiar but different way. Nice work, Michael.

I am a fan of imagery and this line is exquisite:

The mountains & valley burned with our dying pains.

I look forward to hearing it soon, I hope.
