AINT I A WOMAN words by Sojourner Truth, with some adaptions by Joel Sattler

Spoken:

So much racket! Must be something out of kilter!

That man over there says women need to be helped into carriages,
Lifted over ditches, and have the best place everywhere!
Well, nobody helps me into carriages,
Or over mud puddle or gives me ANY best place!
Look at me! LOOK AT ME!

AINT I A WOMAN???!!!???

Sung:

Look at me!
Look at my arm!
I have ploughed and planted
Sown and reaped and gathered into barns!

I can work as hard
And long as a man!
I’ve borne thirteen children
and seen them sold and bore up best I can.

And when I cried
With a mother’s grief
There was none but Jesus
Who could hear and give me relief.

I can work as hard
And eat as much as a man
I could bear the lash
And at end of day on two feet I stand!

Aint I a woman?
Aint I a woman?
When the day is done and we stand in the sun
Aint I a woman?

No man could head me
No man could try
They could beat me down
But I would get back up
and I will not just lay down and die

Aint I a woman
Aint I a woman
Aint I your equal, friend and lover
Aint I a woman

When Eve was made
When she was the first
She turned the world around upside down
And set Man back on Earth

Aint I a woman
Aint I a woman
Give me your hand and together
We will win again

Aint I a woman?
Aint I a woman?
When the day is done and we stand in the sun
Aint I a woman?

.
