"This, too will pass" you always say
"Tomorrow will be a better day
So put your head high and face today
Like no battle you've faced before"

"I love you more than life" you said
Just hearing those words warmed my heart
"I wouldn't trade you for all the world
We will never be apart"

You told me once not long ago to be proud of myself
To let my true colors and feelings show
"I'll be behind you wherever you go
You can always count on me"

I heard you say when I was hurt
You would never do that to me
And not to get down when others did
Cause you'd always be there for me

But there's some things you never told me
Maybe you still don't know
Sure, everything will eventually pass
But sometimes the passing is slow

Often the ones who should love you the most
Are the one's who hurt you the worst
So before you decide to say that you love,
Examine your true feelings first

And now that my life's just coming to play
You tell me that I am a punk
For expressing myself in my own sort of way
For not being a clone and a kiss-up

To hear you talk about hurt is absurd
The damage you've done is so deep
May I remind you, though, that life has rules
And it's all coming back to you for keeps

I've learned all these lessons the hard way
What a great role model you've been
There's no better teacher than reality
Once it hits and finally sets in

So I guess I really must thank you
I've learned a lot just by watching your ways change
Now I know there's a flipside to everything
And people like you will get paid
