Horses truly are magnificant creatures. A few years ago I was privy to seeing one run freely in a beautiful green meadow. This poem came out of that experience....

He’s part of the meadow
As he dances to the music of the wind,
His flawless gait perfection!
Silky mane flying wildly in the breeze,
His brilliant auburn coat shimmers
Against a canvas of color
Only Nature could fashion!
Suddenly he stops nearby,
And I am completely captivated
By this truly magnificent creature!
In his dark eyes – great wisdom,
He is cautious, yet confident.
Watching me, he chortles softly
Nibbling on tender shoots of grass
Laid before him like a banquet!
An ancient cedar fence surrounds him,
Yet he is not restricted,
His spirit is as free as the wind,
I can see it in his eyes!
The rapid click of my camera
Piques his curiosity, but
He keeps his distance.
I am humbled as our eyes connect!
The sounds of nature all around me
Are suddenly stilled, and I hear
Only the beating of my own heart
As the regal horse approaches the fence.
His stare never wavers, his head held high
He whinnies and stomps one hoof,
Inching ever forward.
Uncertainty niggles; anxiety rises;
But I am riveted to the spot!
With a soft sigh, his warm breath
Caresses my face,
The scent of sweet clover
Like a perfumed whisper!
My long auburn hair, caught in the breeze
Gently brushes against his face,
And he steps back a little.
Then I feel the earth tremble beneath my feet,
Another horse approaches.
Her rounded belly tells a beautiful story,
And he takes one last look at me
Before assuming his place beside his mate
Where they stand together, as if posing.
A few more clicks of my camera,
And they gallop off into the distant meadow,
Blending into the breathtaking scene before me!
With a smile on my face, and a warm feeling inside,
I move away from the worn wooden fence
And continue my stroll in the meadow
Aglow in the wonder of Nature’s splendour.

What a picture covering all senses. I see the meadow. I not only see the meadow but sense the scent of the meadow. I see, not only the horse but the descriptive beauty, the strenght of the horse and feel "the soft sigh of his warm breath," as it ruffles my hair. Beautifully drawn, Annabel.
Your friend, Mark
