Gordon Aamoth Jr. & Rose Maria Abad
I thought of their names
I didn’t know them –
Could not have picked this man or this woman
From a crowd walking by.

Still I know their names.
They began the roll they read
They printed, and mourned in the weeks
And six months and 1 year and well beyond.

They were the beginning, the reminder of tragedy
The beginning –
Of the loss of innocence
Of the dawn of war and cries for blood and justice

The beginning –
Of awakening to ruin
And the drive to recover
To erase the painful evidence
Where their last day was spent.

Their names were the beginning
So I remembered them
Even if I did not know them
About their families, their births,
Their education, their hometowns, or careers.

But I know where they were
And that they died.
And I know the date
They and many others passed from us.

Because they were the beginning
The beginning – that first day
Of many raw and crying days.

So Gordon Aamoth Jr.
And Rose Maria Abad were there
At the beginning
So I think of their names.

I ponder this beginning
Of how we were reborn and would not surrender
To their fury and disdain

Gordon and Rose Maria
And all of you, we remember
As we begin again.

For 9/11, the first anniversary -- and the 3,000 who never can be replaced. Written 14 September 2002.
