Here is a reflection of memories from years past but still remembered.

Each year we celebrate Memorial Day once more

I must say it brings back memories galore

The ones I cherish so much from days when I was just a kid

My uncle owned a farm in the foothills by the mountain bed

We drove up a dirt road, up the mountain side, past an old shed

There sat my uncles farmhouse situated in the field by the pond

I remember we had swam and we fished in that small, clear millpond

And we walked through the woods, many times, listening to the birds

They sang sweet songs; the most melodic tunes I ever heard.

I would gaze past the tree branches dancing in the air

And watch the clouds floating above as if they had nothing to care

Down from the farmhouse, standing in the mud there by the shed

I’d watch an old milk cow, contentedly chewing its’ cud with nothing to dread

Behind the barn was a pig pin and nearby a corn field

From these sources my uncle gathered his annual yield

Those were carefree days for me and my next of kin

We came each year for Memorial Day and in autumn we came again

This time it was autumn, when we came each Thanksgiving Day

The summer was over and the autumn leaves were then falling

The air would be chilly and no crickets were heard calling

There were even times when snow came and was gliding from the sky

We would sit and watch the autumn leaves as they came floating by

Oh, the wonderful memories that still linger in my mind’s eye

I contemplate those times with great delight causing me to softly sigh
