Memorial Day

In honor of America's finest from every generation of our history.

Memorial Day

a trio of gritty combatants solemnly

gathered about the alabaster bases

of Arlington's  finest site markers

memories heralded by the rush of grief

unrestrained within jackets adorned

with tour ribbons medals and patches

other than recall they offer no value

comrades fallen now silently lay

beyond their words and emotions

sun or sky of gray matter not for

in this place with eternity they’ll stay

Tarawa and life far away, very long ago

the moons of life and love held forever in

the rapture of abeyance not understood

now as then duty, honor bound to obey

into no other mêlée or fray will they march

commanded by circumstance and orders

their recall sounded too late that day

history knew defeat was to be temporary

would that they could again rise and salute

Old Glory’s unfurled majesty with pride

by all that is worthy Heaven knows they’d try

I very nearly missed this one. Glad I didn't. You honor those who died, who served their country in powerfully moving lines. Well done.

The past would always contribute something in shaping today. It is only right that we shouldn't forget what our elders have done to make this world more livable. A compelling write, indeed Jon. Peace and love in Christ.

They gave their lives for symbols of ideals war doesn't live up to. Blindly following orders means atrocities will occurs. Invoking war gives license to killing anyone--men, women, and children-- in the zone or fog of war. I prefer the wars of Ghandi and Martin Luther King to demonizing a whole people so our highly trained, equipped and brainwashed can kill them.

That's why our troops come home demoralized and often bitter.

I agree with words already chosen - "powerful" and "compelling." You're a talented poet, Jon, with a reverent and expressive heart.

The "alabaster bases" in our D/FW National Cemetery are what catch my breath. In few years past, I've made the effort to drive some Veterans
to this cemetery...a few didn't even know it was so close by.
Jon, your poetic words are such wonderful memorials to our Vets!
Blessings and Love - Micke

And there are out there, many that have faded away like General Patton said, we should also remember those, always.
