As birds now suffer on our Gulf,

Once again, at the hands of man,

A tale about some birds that I saw,

Nature’s lessons are so very grand.

“Reading about nature is fine,

But if a person goes to the woods,

And he watches, and he listens carefully,

He can learn far more than what is in books,

For they speak, with the voice of God.”

George Washington Carver

I was really fortunate on this trip

I had been blessed, with good luck

It is not every day, in this world of ours

That one can actually see it raining ducks

The very first day, on our trip to the north

I had noticed a mating pair of wood ducks

These aquatic birds are extremely fascinating

I love listening to their many calls and clucks

They had almost been exterminated

By the beginning of the 20th century

They need old growth forests to survive

Unlike other ducks, Woodies nest in trees

Thankfully, many nature loving people on lakes

Began constructing wooden nesting boxes for them

Today, wood ducks have thankfully made a comeback

These handmade nesting boxes, have prevented their end

And very luckily for me, our cabin was near an old nesting box

I would arise each dawn, and so joyously watch this mating pair

One morning, I witnessed something that was heavenly to behold

As their parents coaxed them on, their offspring, jumped into the air

I was really fortunate on this trip,

I had been blessed, with good luck;

It is not every day, in this world of ours,

That one can actually see it raining ducks.

And what a truly marvelous sight it was,

Nine newborn wood ducks, jumping down;

New life is always so miraculous to behold,

Nature provides wondrous sights and sounds.

Absolutely a poem of perfection! I have such a fear for all of their futures.

How fortunate and blessed we are to have God's creatures amongst us; yet, how irratically thoughtless we are of their protection! I love this poem, as it enabled me to see what you were seeing, Ed. Great imagery, my friend...THANKS.
