Inspired by my own oil painting of "The Old Boat" this poem expresses the thoughts I have when I let my imagination free.....

"The Old Boat"

Painting and Poem by Pamela June Kimmell

Is there a “story” behind the painting of the old boat? Well, it was painted about 40 years ago by me during an oil painting class I took through Arlington County. My instructor was an extremely talented artist. He was very complimentary of my work on this painting - particularly my sky and the effect of the waves on the sand. I was proud to bring it home and some years later I gave it to my sister Carol. At one point it no longer fit with her décor - she had “downsized” her home - so the old boat returned to the artist and here it resides to this day. It’s one of my favorites. I can imagine standing on the shore perhaps as a young girl, holding my Daddy’s hand and asking him to tell me a story about the old boat…..where did it come from….why is it just sitting here….toward that imaginary scene, I crafted this poem….a tribute to all little girls and their fathers for this Father’s Day:

“Daddy, Daddy, I love this old boat!

It’s battered and worn yet it still stays afloat!”

“Why yes my dear girl, it has had a long life -

Has weathered the storms through trouble and strife -

It’s life has been hard, yet you see it stays strong -

Through wind and high seas, like an old sailor’s song”.

As the girl heard his words she looked up at her Dad

And she thought once again what great luck that she had

To belong to this man who was battered and worn -

Who had weathered the storms yet had strength to go on

So she pulled on his sleeve and he bent to her side

And she planted a kiss on his cheek with great pride.

So like the boat his strength was still there

A lesson in life on the shore they did share.
