“A bird doesn’t sing because it has an answer;

It sings, because it has a song.”

Maya Angelou

It was just around dawn

When my wife woke me

She really wanted to know

“Who The Heck is Phoebe?”

“Huh?!” I soon whispered

Wearily sitting up in our bed

“Someone keeps calling Phoebe;

Go Find Out Who That Is, Mr. Ed!”

I crawled out of bed, rubbing my eyes

And I sat at our window, listening intently

There was nothing out there, except silence

Then I soon heard: “Phoebe, Phoebe, Phoebe!”

I now laughed out loud, looking at my spouse

And said, “Why, it’s Phoebe, herself, out there;

She’s an old friend of mine, Mean Tall Woman,

I sure do hope that you have some food to spare!”

“What? Where the heck is this old friend of yours from?

Why is she here at this hour, and what should I feed her?”

“My dear old friend, Phoebe, just arrived here, from Florida,

And she really loves Flies, Spiders, and Delectible, Juicy, Worms!”

I laughed again, and dragged my wife to the windowsill

Where I pointed out the beautiful little bird on our lawn

“You really can be quite a jerk!” my spouse now chirped

“Shh! And listen up! She really loves to sing out, at dawn!”

“Phoebe! Phoebe! Phoebe!”again sang our tiny gorgeous visitor

A wondrous Eastern Phoebe, who had flown up here from the south

“I sure hope that you have some nice juicy insects for her, in the fridge.”

“I sure do, Mr. Jerk, and I have some for you.  Now, Open Your Mouth!”

It was just around dawn,

When my wife woke me;

She really wanted to know,

“Who The Heck is Phoebe?”

Cute one Ed. I watch from my deck and admire their beauty as they sing as if to thank me for their food. Another great write.

Lovely poem. I seldom receive such visits from friends but they don’t come from far away places like Phoebe. They just come down from nearby trees to take breakfast with us. We as a family feed birds every morning. I like how they keep time. At around 7:00 A.M the first batch arrives. They bring joy to the whole family. They remind us of the birds we had left behind when we fled from war.
