Inspired by my personal experience with this most difficult issue.

"We can't exactly pinpoint why,"

the specialist advised,

"but nothing's going to happen. Sorry."

Done, we realized.

The two-year round of docs and pills,

the hypodermic marks,

exacted such a heavy toll,

but never struck the sparks.

We drove home crushed, awash in woe,

beyond mere grief or sad.

Determined, though, no matter what,

to be a Mom and Dad.

We looked up an attorney then,

to help us to adopt.

A complex legal process, but

we swore we'd not be stopped.

Before too long, the lawyer found

a single mom-to-be.

She had two kids already,

and could not face having three.

Inside a dingy coffee shop

we asked to raise her child.

Through narrowed eyes she sized us up,

then: "Yes," she said, and smiled.

For months we waited, full of fears,

till nerves were frayed and worn.

And then, as dawned Thanksgiving Day,

our baby girl was born.

A miracle! So perfect, pink.

We took her home to stay.

She’s now in paramedic school;

the years have flashed away.

And now each time I see my child

so grown-up, strong and bright,

I bless our infertility...

God made it turn out right!

LW
