Traveling down I-75 today through Central Ohio and it is where most of my Native American poetry comes to me. Today it came to me as a song.

Where has the Shawnee gone?

Standing here on sacred ground
High on a hilltop looking all around
With the wind there is a mystic sound
Asking where has the Shawnee gone?

I hear a crying ow wes sha ne na
Where has the Shawnee gone?

There is a hawk in a tall oak tree
I look at him, looking back at me
He wants to know why it had to be
Where has the Shawnee gone?

I hear a crying ow wes sha ne na
Where has the Shawnee gone?

There’s a spirit in a backwood's stream
That flows through it like a distant dream
And just what it is, is just as it seems
A spirit crying where has the Shawnee gone

I hear a crying ow wes sha ne na
Where has the Shawnee gone?

In Central Ohio it is everywhere
A otherworldly feeling hanging in the air
The soil cries out "how can this be fair"
Where has the Shawnee gone?

I hear a crying ow wes sha ne na
Where has the Shawnee gone?
