Deep in the heart of Old Havana,
A gifted author once shared his essence
In the warm embrace of the people he loved.
The great Hemmingway thrived in this place called Cuba,
A tiny island in the sun, where the struggle for ascendancy
Has taken its toll on an enduring city of long ago.
But true beauty never fades
When the heart sees beyond the surface.
For within the crumbling remnants of once stunning architecture,
The regal bone structure remains everlasting!
And nearly five centuries after its birth, Old Havana still lives!
Amid the turmoil of changing centuries,
Hemmingway’s place in their hearts remains steadfast!
With eternal admiration of their cherished bard,
The people still welcome all into their treasured sanctuary,
Ernest Hemmingway’s favourite hotel and café…
The Hotel Ambos Mundos, with its brilliantly stuccoed façade,
Stands imposingly on the corner of a tiny cobblestone street
Once traversed by the great Hemmingway himself!
The richly designed Spanish architecture is astonishing!
Elaborately crafted, the ostentatious building is timeless!
Ornate balustrades, their wide rails adorned with colourful flowers
Rise above the roadway, traversed only by foot.
The stately building stands in stark contrast to its surroundings,
Eternal confutation to the ravages of time!
Hemmingway was irresistibly drawn to this old city,
And once she wrapped herself around his heart,
No matter where he travelled, he took her with him!
Great inspiration flourishes within the grand café,
With its twenty foot ceilings and marble flooring.
The entire café a veritable shrine to a beloved bard!
For within these walls greatness was born,
And the worn pages of a tired old journal
Became timeless treasures!
