“It’s more than we can handle;

We have far more coming in,

Than going out.”

A Gulf Coast Animal Shelter Director

Families have lost, their livelihoods

Thousands of birds, are already dead

Oil-mired sea turtles, now facing extinction

And for Gulf pets, very abysmal days are ahead

They are again being abandoned, along the Gulf

They are once again, very sadly, being left behind

So many families, can no longer afford to keep them

Like Katrina, this oil spill’s been horrendously unkind

But unlike Katrina, there is now nowhere for them to go

After the hurricane, we shipped pets, all across the states

Animal shelters in other parts of the country accepted them

Thousands found homes, far from the Gulf, which was great

But today, America’s pets are now being abandoned, everywhere

Our abysmal economy, has America’s animal shelters over capacity

Please find it in your heart to help America’s latest homeless animals

If many in our nation did that, we could curtail this latest pet tragedy

Many of my neighbors compassionately took in Katrina survivors

I, myself, five years later, have been blessed, with three of them

But today, I sadly see so many, still buying pets at the pet store

America’s penchant to support abysmal puppy mills, never ends

Now is the time to adopt a shelter pet, to make room for another

Now is the time to donate time, funds, and direly needed supplies

Now is the time to once again, help those who are innocent victims

The numbers are again overwhelming, but we owe it to them, to try

“Not to hurt our humble brethren (the animals),

Is our first duty to them, but to stop there, is not enough.

“We have a much higher mission—

To be of service to them, whenever they require it.”

Saint Francis of Assisi

Humane Society of Louisiana

Ah Ed, I sorely wish I could take in a stray or abandoned pet, but I am very close to losing my own residence, well the property I park on anyway, so taking in a dog would be no good for both the dog and myself...e

Such a sad and heartbreaking situation.

It is sad and seemingly unending. I often wonder when or if the governments will step in and say enough is enough and tax the sale of puppy-mill like pet stores so high that there prices will force people wanting pets to take a second look at adopting existing animals.
I wonder if Government would step in, if in distress a child was left behind? if you know what I mean. Bless you! Jasmin Horst

Ed, you raise so many points and the validity is warranted. Don't know what to say or do except either adopt or give to the fund..

So sad, our whole world is in trouble, this is only the beginning..and mankind is to blame for all of it..

Much peace, love and light,

It may already be too late ... God help us all! We are the truely evil species for doing this and not doing something about containing the leak sooner! So sad!
