 Reading Biblical Resurrections

Yet…I followed
the steady sound of sable hoofs;
Wagon wheels on a dusty road
with wooden spokes as I passed through
Pennsylvania Dutch graveyards…

Amish Mennonite wears
his laced black leather shoes
riding alone in a horse drawn hearse
he is focused ...destined and true …

His attentions through gravel dust
are of the elder rituals;
Where his community and church
support eternal salvations…knowing.

At the home of his sorrowed neighbor;
Where the parlor service benches
are placed in front of the open casket,
the congregation come together
for the final viewing…

Reading biblical resurrections
and accounts of life transitions
the wooden casket made of pine
is of the old Amish order…

Awaiting the transporting death carriage
to deliver body and modest pine crafted box
within the final placement burrowed,
are the chosen earthen grounds they keep…

Where no song will sing vociferously out loud.
But their funerary customs offering resting
at the cortege procession-sacred utterances
giving to their spoken hymnals
the colloquial words of the Lord’s prayer…

…they bury beloved member to soil-

Knowing through the compass of time
everything will decay to the earth;
Where plentiful roots will become more fertile
and grow deeper, nourishing their faith
sanctioned to follow their religious services
within avowal’s scriptural community
as a union …they each…with love…from their soul
support their biblical beliefs…

This is priceless...you captured it on a good day. You've a sharp eye on what really matters in life...and death...a coach runs through it...such soulful reflectors...slower pace and antiquity sets us in for the long haul spiritually...

Staying in touch with what's real and inevitable seems more and more difficult with each passing day, Vickie, we are constantly missing the essentials, the great truths, in our madness for novelty and gimmickry. Your fine voice brings us back to earth, literally.

A wonderful write Vickie. They do live in their traditional lifestyle and I often believe they are better off then most.

Excellant write Vic capturing the solemnity of a religios group that truly practise as they preach. May not be for everyone but for many it is a way of life.

Near and Distant Horizons by John Herlihy

A compelling case for the need to identify the sources and authenticity of a traditional knowledge that still has the explanatory power to shape and enrich people’s lives in today’..
