-Dedicated To A Good Samaritan-

“I could not have slept last night,

If I had left that tiny creature to perish.”

Abraham Lincoln

These blazing hot Dog Days of Summer

Have not been kind to Man’s Best Friend

And, our continued cruelty and callousness

So very sadly these days, never seems to end

So many horrible stories on the news, these days

Of canines now being left inside, inferno-like cars

And, asinine excuses that people still come up with

“I wasn’t gone very long; Oh, I didn’t go very far.”

It doesn’t take very long at all, in this wretched heat

For the inside of a vehicle, to reach over 120 degrees

I was on my way out of a grocery store, just yesterday

When someone yelled, “Will someone help me, please!”

A very distraught woman was attempting to get a dog out

Of a stifling hot car; she didn’t ignore his yelps and cries

It wasn’t her car, and it wasn’t her pet inside, suffocating

But she wasn’t about to let this tiny, sweltering victim, die

I helped her pry down the window on this dog’s inferno

She grabbed the little guy, and gave him some cool water

We both believed she had done the right thing for this dog

But when his owner arrived, all he did, was curse and holler

“How dare you break into my car and touch my dog,

I should call the police, and have you both arrested;

I certainly wasn’t gone very long, and my dog is fine;

You meddling animal rights idiots are god-damned pests.”

As this guy now drove off in a huff, with his still panting dog

The woman thanked me for my help, and we headed on our way

When I got home, I told my spouse what had happened at the store

She shook her head and told me some stories she read, just yesterday

In Maryland, a 14-year-old Golden retriever died in a car while her owner shopped at Costco, on a 104-degree day.

In New York, a six-pound Maltese died in a 140-degree car while his owner went for a cool, refreshing swim in a state park.

In Wisconsin, a woman left her pit bull in her car at Wal-Mart. Police broke the car window and tried to save the dog, but he died at the scene.

Please, Don’t Just Walk On By,

When You See a Dog, About To Die.

what I can't understand is why they don't leave the dog at home inside the house, in the cellar, or a cool room, if it's too hot in the yard. there is no excuse for such ignorance !You did good, Ed!

This must be published in all newspapers to alert people of the dangers of leaving pets inside and inferno while shopping in a nearby mall. Sad but educational poem

yes anyone that leaves pets or children in a car in extreme conditions of heat or cold should be charged with manslaughter in the case of children and cruelty in the case of animals...

I don't review every poem I read, only those that touch me. This one most certainly did. Nicely done Mr. Ed, It probably won't reach most of the people who need to see it the most, but hopefully it will make someone think twice and that's a good thing. Thank you. Dick

I don't find this surprising at all Ed. Probably the most inhumane creature on Earth is man.
God bless,

I have dedicated most of my life to looking after animals and it is burning me out. Not because of the needs of the animals but because so many are animals that need to be rescued from immature, irresponsible pet owners. If we are going to insist on keeping animals as pets then every school in every nation should have a class on animal care, starting from grade one on - reading, writing and arimetic and responsible petcare. People can be cruel and supremely stupid, of that there is no doubt. Keep writing your poems and stories, it helps.

You should have let that person call the police as he would have probably been charged for he wouldn't have left the dog in the car anymore...I used to leave the engine running with the a/c cranking for Rufuz & you can be sure no one would have tried stealing that car with him in there...;-) ed

This angers me. People are so ... g.d. ... heartless, they leave their dogs or CHILDREN in the hot car, for crying out ... and then get ticked off because you or someone else did something about it? Let 'em sue. Then you can tell the judge all about what they did, see how they look. Suddenly, not so innocent. Lock THEM in the hot car. I'm sorry, Ed, this just made me so mad and now I'm crying ... thank you for being there for this dog. :(

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.

A needed and important write; so heartbreaking that people don't care for their pets! If they aren't going to care for them properly, give them to someone who CAN and WILL! Thank GOD you were there to help that poor pooch; but I feel sorry for the (ungrateful) owner getting all bent out of shape about it! I wonder how HE would feel if HE were in the poor dog's shoes???? Food for thought?? ... (An eye for an eye, as it says in the Bible ... )

(((HUGS))) and much love, your friend in Tx., Karen Lynn. :( *tears!*

God, I wish we had Presidents and Prime Ministers like Lincoln, we'd probably have laws that would help these sweet little creatures, in the meantime, these most loving and courages folk, that help a helpless victim of neglect, I always said, we make angels here on earth, not in heaven, they'll have their wings to fly there, when the time comes. Blessings! Jasmin Horst
