“The glory of friendship is not the outstretched hand,
Nor the kindly smile, nor the joy of companionship;
It is the spiritual inspiration that comes to one,
When he discovers that someone else believes in him,
And is willing to trust him with his friendship.”
Ralph Waldo Emerson
True friends truly come in all shapes and sizes
It’s so marvelous, whenever they can be found
These two, Jack and Junior, are always together
One is tiny, one big, but now, best friend clowns
Little Jack had been abandoned in a nearby park
Junior was left behind in Katrina, in New Orleans
These days, these once lonely canines, have bonded
And they now both delight, in their mischievous schemes
Junior is The Master of Deception, for their antics
While Little Jack is most skilled, in daring robberies
While Junior distracts my spouse, when preparing meals
Little Jack will grab a piece of food, and race off with glee
Soon, I’ll hear my spouse now yelling at the top of her lungs
While Junior and Jack meet in the basement, to share their loot
While my wife cusses, I now find myself, howling with laughter
Because what will always follow next, to me, is always a real hoot
Very quickly, after they devour their latest big score in the basement
They will both race back upstairs and feign remorse at my wife’s feet
They’ve both figured out how to get to her, with their puppy dog eyes
Before long, she forgives them, and they now each get a hug and a treat
And quite often, late at night, while my spouse and I are both fast asleep
These Two of a Kind will very skillfully raid a food cupboard or a drawer
We’ll awake to find a trail of crumbs or wrappings leading to the basement
And several of her favorite cookies, or a piece of pie, will now exist, no more
“Jack and Junior! You two are really in Big Trouble now!”
And so am I, because I can’t help it – I always laugh and howl
“There are big ships and small ships,
But the best ship of all, is friendship.”
