It Might Have Been Him

I WATCH YOU ON THE PODIUM

AND MY MIND GOES TO ANOTHER TIME

AND ANOTHER YOUNG MAN

WITH DREAMS IN HIS HEART.

HE WAS A CHAMPION

BUT IN HIS MIND HE LOST THE FIGHT.

HE LEARNED AT A VERY EARLY AGE

TO SELF MEDICATE TO EASE THE PAINS

OF HIS YOUNG LIFE.

THE DRUGS AND THE BOOZE STOLE

HIS DREAMS

AND THE CHAMPION WITHIN LEFT HIM.

I WATCH YOU ON THE PODIUM

AND TEARS RUN DOWN MY CHEEK

KNOWING

IT MIGHT HAVE BEEN HIM.

I agree with Elisabeth. This is a sad and delicate writing, and it is filled with heart and regard for this person. I have seen this air of existence before--at least, a few times; it is never a good thing to watch possibilities become dried wells because of substance abuse.

Brings to mind that old saying..."There but by the grace of God, go I." Nice write.

Cheers,
Dan

Very sad, yet a beautiful poem with important lessons told.
