Lips & Beads

© Jaimey Perham 08/18/2010

Beads tossed to half naked woman on the crowded busy street

Seeds of good fortune for the men at their dancing happy feet

Weeds of excitement when two complete strangers meet

Deeds granted on their lips in the scorching New Orleans heat

Needs fulfilled in the back of the strip bar on the lover’s leather seat

Pleads from the unruly crowd outside on the angry policeman’s beat

Heaves of color and jazz exploding from the floating carnival of treat

Leaves of flesh exposed from the balcony that once was neat

Sleeves of clothes scattered down old famous Bourbon Street

Seas from hurricane liquor flood the sinking southern state

Keys to the city ignored as residents stand on rooftops on that tragic date

Trees and oil sludge wash up on the beach shore near Greed’s home gate

Bees of fisherman come home with empty pockets and only their initial bait

We are all connected to the people of New Orleans, and we with them determine our very own fate…
