If God
La Belle Rouge

If God doesnít want me to laugh
Why did He give me laughter
and a wicked sense of humor?

If God doesnít want me to dance
Why is there music?
Why do I have feet and rhythm?

If He doesnít want me to enjoy food
Why do I get hungry,
have taste buds, and a nose?

If God didnít expect me
to make love passionately,
Why do I have affection and desire?

If God wanted me to never be angry
Why do I have a temper
and a powerful sense of justice?

If God didn't expect me to care for
and help others on the journey
why did he give me compassion?

If children arenít meant
to be loved and protected
Why are they born small and defenseless?
Why is there maternal and paternal instinct?

If all are made in Godís image
Why would prejudice be justified
Against someone of another race?

If words canít kill or heal
Why do we feel their power
And why does God expect us
To control our tongue?

If God didn't know I would weep
Why did He give me tears?

If God didn't know I would need help
Why did He tell me to pray?

If God thought it a waste of time
To get lost in the mystical beauty of nature,
Why did He make the world so beautiful,
And give me four senses to experience it all?

If God doesnít love poetry
Why did He create poetic souls?

If God created me the way I am,
Who are you to judge His creation?

2003 La Belle Rouge

A rhetorical question Belle. Effectively posed and answered with great aplomb. You dispatched the words with passion and fashioned them to please and give rise to question. May peace and love be always with you my dear friend. Jon Michael

Aha. So true. Very well constructed and good follow through on the why ifs. I enjoyed following the bouncing ball on the sing-a-long like poetry.

A beautiful painting LaBelle and excellent thoughtful questions. My new favorite of yours. I wonder what happened between the Old Testament and the New. From a Samson-type warrior killing hundreds of thousands with the jawbone of an ass to turning the other cheek while you're being pillaged by money-grubbers in silk suits. I am sure that there is a beautiful balance, somewhere in all of it, that is yet to be found. For me ... my free will tells me to be patient and trust God.

Nice! These are good words! Although all the verses spoke to me, I liked the one about anger the best.

And now I'm going to judge you! I HEREBY JUDGE YOU BEAUTIFUL!

Love this. I feel that God gave us free will to make our own choices and use our own concience as our guide. You are very justified in this dispute of judgment.

The rhetoricals roll effortlessly, Belle, and are a challenge to everyone who believes in a Force behind it all and a Hand in it. When I see the absolutely selfish way natural creatures in the wild behave because they have to I question goodness...yes. there is beauty in necessity and indeed in savagery but goodness is to one's own, another dimension of the selfish gene.
You've set me off here and I like that. Thank You for this work.
