Twice now
Total strangers
Have paid for my meals.
The first, I'm told,
Was a "gentlemen"
Who anonymously paid
On his way
Out the door;
The second,
An elderly Black woman,
Gently placed
The paid check
On the table
By my elbow,
Blessed me,
Then disappeared
From my sight.
Who am I
To deserve such charity?
What have I done
To earn their kind regard?
I am humbled
By their gifts
And can only hope
To one day
Pay them forward
By blessing someone else
With a gift
From my bounty.
