On Sunday afternoon, it was sunny and they went to the movies. They rolled in slower and earlier than anyone else, and she was supposed to sit far up front where wheelchairs go. But they’ve never been fond of supposed to’s so she sat in the aisle instead. It was probably a fire hazard but then, they are very old and understand the probability of raging fire in one’s lifetime. They settled in and watched the best movie they could remember. For all they knew it was the greatest movie ever made in the history of movie-making.
When I came over to make pasta later that night, they were both beaming like newlyweds on their first morning of marriage. She reached for a tissue and he already had it in his hand. They laughed together and decided it was too late to call Margie in Rhode Island, but first thing in the morning they’d call from her room in the home.
He said, “I really liked that movie. That sure was neat. It was just like Seabiscuit.”
She said, “It was very good.”
When asked, they told us, “We stayed awake for the whole thing. Couldn’t take our eyes off the darn thing.”
Later, meatballs tasted better than childhood and the new salad dressing was “delicious, superb, good pick.”
The Go Team won the ball game and the dishes were easy. The pudding turned out okay, but the ice cream was perfect, I know because he told me “I think you’d like this ice cream,” and held out a spoonful.
When it was time to go, he said, “We had fun today, didn’t we kid?”
She nodded and said, “Sure.”
And just when it seemed the night couldn’t get any warmer, even though it was October, she turned to us and said, “he even held my hand.”
